Route 66

I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow from Chicago to Los Angeles. I was wondering, I want to get there fast, but I also want to ride some of the historic stretches of Route 66. What do you recommend as the best combo?

I'm a big fan of Campfire Park, and often attend campfires and talks. Question: Where are these posted? I missed one the other night that I would have liked to attend.
