Policy 001 – On the Keeping of the Flame

On the care and keeping of the central fire.

Establishes who may tend the Council fire, when it must be lit, and how its continuity is honored between gatherings.

Policy Overview Ratified
Scope All formal Council sessions and recognized Campfire Park gatherings.
Applies To Councilors,
designated fire tenders,
and any host convening a formal gathering under the Campfire Park banner.
Review Cycle Reviewed each Winter Summit, or upon adoption of a new Charter section affecting Council ceremony.

Implementation Notes

Any session opened without a designated fire tender on record shall be noted in the minutes.
Repeated lapses may be referred to the Stewardship Subcommittee for remediation.

In all ages, gatherings have drawn themselves into a circle around a common light.
Within Campfire Park, that light is not merely symbolic; it is a living reminder
that no decision is made without shared warmth and shared witness.

On Designated Fire Tenders

Each formal Council session shall appoint at least one Fire Tender for the duration of the gathering.
The Fire Tender’s name shall be recorded in the Council record and announced at the opening of the session.

On When the Fire Must Be Lit

The fire (literal or symbolic) shall be kindled before the first agenda item is taken up
and maintained, within reason, until the closing benediction or adjournment.

On Continuity Between Gatherings

Where a literal flame cannot be continuously maintained between sessions,
a symbolic ember—such as a carried coal, a lantern, or a page of the Council’s register—
may serve in its place, provided its meaning is explained to those present.

Footnotes & Annotations

Note: “Fire” in this policy may include lanterns, candles, or other safe symbolic substitutes
where open flames are impractical or prohibited.
