Bobby Angel cathartic tale of …
Natural disaster and rebirth.
Mass Exodus (from the Swamp)
Words and music by Bobby Angel
I remember the days of many but panthers were just a few.Ā Thatās why Iām cryinā even though panthers are plenty because Iām gonna really miss each and every one of you. For example Dusty Torre.Ā He had a really thick skin.Ā Some peopleāll remember his dirty looks but me Iāll remember his gap-toothed grin. Or how about Wynn Carney? He had a boat he took on the sea.Ā It took me a while to forgive him for whatever he did or didnāt do with the L-28 key. Or Melissa Olsen how she was a travelinā fool. Hold tight to your passport! Thatās your new golden rule. Or Pat Kenney?Ā Yes I know he left long ago, but I still see and hear his voice in the halls. Itās true I have a problem letting go.
Remember your first day when everything was shiny and new. Now everyoneās a little older and the swamp will be a little colder because weāre gonna miss each and every one of you.
Melissa she was a birder.Ā She liked to count them in the trees and listen to them call to her in the Big Cypress breeze. Or David Adams ā a Kemosabe all the way.Ā How even when it was shitty heād say āItās a beautiful day!ā Or Pedro Ramos.Ā He was the big fish of Deep Lake.Ā Now heās swam across the pond to open the glades to more water gates. How about Noreen she was the UPS package queen.Ā No matter how bad the story, not even close to the worse sheās seen.
Remember how it started when you saw it all with fresh eyes. Now everything is changing and your life will be rearranging. Nobody said it would ever be easy to say goodbye
Then thereās Jim Snyder He already got a song.Ā Not gonna give you a copy, donāt wanna know what I did wrong. Or Chris Derman He had a long running stride.Ā Enjoyed kale in his smoothies and put up a lot of interpretation signs. Or Craig Davis, he was a MSU fan through and through.Ā Now the second best school in Michigan that Coach Harbaugh took over at the U. Or Jim Burch and all them tricks up his sleeves.Ā Still up there in his office.Ā Gonna take more than not paying him to make him leave.
I remember fondly all the good times we had and even though youāre going you were definitely worth knowing and that your off to greener pastures I am glad.
Oh and canāt forget Betty and them big eyes and bright smile.Ā Howād we all line up at her desk to ask her questions single file. Or the time she said āThank you kindly,ā she always said it so kind.Ā Iām gonna tape it the next time she says it so I can play it back in my mind. Iāll never forget you ever I promise through and through.Ā Youāll always be a friend even if our paths never cross again.Ā Like a sister Iām your brother they can replace you but theyāll never be no other …
Iām really gonna miss you!
Pilot of Many Talents
Words and music by Bobby Angel
āSafety briefing, manifest, extinguisherās on the wall. Seatbelts are fastened,ā and then in he made his call. By the look on his face I could tell that he missed me as we poured back some shots of Six Romeo Whiskey. His Man Card was long, but heād never boast. He didnāt like to spread too much butter on that toast. “Donāt need no Garmin or iPhone tool.” He got where he was going using visual rules. Heard him before I saw him there, taller than the pine trees, five hundred feet in the air. āGather what you got, get ready for the ride.ā Next thing I knew we were flying 5 Miles downstream through crystal blue sky
He wasnāt a mercenary, nor was he cheap to rent, but trust me when I say he was worth every cent
He was a pilot of many talents
āDriving on asphalt is slow as molasses. I know a shortcut, Iāll meet you at Oasis.” Safe and sound and fashionably late. He landed soft as a feather using Auto-Rotate. He said pigs arenāt a problem, panthers took care of that. Donāt mean there aināt a IHOG breathing down myback. When will we return, said he couldnāt say. He works in a different space and time where thereās 8 weeks in a day. āSee them tractor trailers, they really look like ants, an that ORV trail remind me of a giant pair of corduroy pants.ā āA flock of Ivory Bills!ā Then we heard a thump ⦠Donāt worry about that, itās just a hydro flight getting bumped.
Some people said he had a sixth sense, but it was the 7th, 8th, 9th, and tenth
That made him a pilot with many talents
Somebody shouted, “We got fire in the hills.” Donāt worry about that, I know a man named Bill. Weāll raise him on the radio or put a pie on the ledge. āDid you know that botanologically sawgrass is a sedge?ā Fire spread quick, everyone ran for cover.ā This thing is rapidly turning into one big mother!ā āGet me some more buckets, top āem up high. If you ever saw the movie youād know Bambi wasnāt a girl but a guy.ā It was mutiny in the swamp when he said that heād retire. It was 105 heat index but I swear he didnāt even perspire. Young bucks all around him were getting ready to fade. āYou gotta pump a lot of iron if you donāt stand in the shade.”
Pacing back and forth, Generalās in his tent, smiling at his order that only one man be sent
He was a pilot of many talents
He wonāt eat no Twinkie, says raisins are healthier fare. Once he was tied down by some skunk apes and he didnāt even scare. Then up from the pond apple came a python snake he fended it off with a chocolate Hostess Cup Cake. Then it got away, it slithered āround the bend. He followed it waste deep until bitter end. But he didnāt give up, then Plan B rang like a Bell as he checked into the second floor at Two Bravo Hotel. Didnāt believe in legends, āThatās a bunch of baloney,ā until he was rescued by midgets on a herd of tiny ponies. They took him to their hideout where they light a lamp. āI always wondered about this place, I thought it was a trespass camp.ā
Could go either way, it was a mission in the balance. Braver than the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
He was a pilot of many talents
Some people knew him as the Eye in the Sky, but we all knew him just as one laid back guy. Heād go up and over, more than I ever deserved. His favorite type of jam was saw palmetto preserves. How many flight hours? He wouldnāt fathom a guess. Gators canāt remember but we weāll never forget. āYou do what you do, Iād even do it for nada. Now Iām sitting in Islamorada sipping on a pina colada.ā He was very magnamonious, heād never pick a side, or at least heād never show his hand when he took you for a ride. He knew if he did, it would probably cause a skism. āLetās leave it that I like to work with all the people in every division.ā
Sometimes I thank God for all the angels he sent, but there was one who was more equal than all the rest
He was a pilot of many talents
